Duplicate notifications or messages

Please read both sections below. It is easy to confuse duplicate notifications with duplicate messages but they are very different problems.

Duplicate notifications

The information in this section only applies if 8sms is running on Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean) or lower. If 8sms is running on Android 4.4 (KitKat) or higher, please make 8sms the default sms app.

Whenever there is a new message, if you get two notifications appearing (in your phone's notifications area) but there is ONLY ONE message in the message thread or inbox, then the problem is duplicate notifications.

Duplicate notifications often occur if 8sms creates a notification for a new message, and the stock messaging app also creates a notification for the same message.

To fix this, either:

1. Turn off notifications for the stock messaging app that came with your phone (if 8sms is in default mode), or
2. Disable the stock messaging app that came with your phone (if 8sms is in Stand-alone mode).

If you try this and the problem still occurs, please contact us for further help.

Duplicate messages

Whenever there is a new message, TWO identical messages appear in the message thread or inbox, then the problem is duplicate messages.

(Receiving) duplicate messages all the time

The information in this section only applies if 8sms is running on Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean) or lower. If 8sms is running on Android 4.4 (KitKat) or higher, please make 8sms the default sms app.

If this problem happens ALL the time for EVERY message, then usually it is caused by 8sms operating in Stand-alone mode AND another messaging app (maybe the stock app) also running.

When a new message arrives, 8sms (in Stand-alone mode) saves it to the phone. If another messaging app is operating, it will also save the message to the phone. This results in each new message being saved to the phone TWICE.

To fix this, either:

1. Use 8sms in default mode, or
2. Disable any other messaging apps on your phone.

If you try this and the problem still occurs, please contact us for further help.

(Sending) duplicate mms messages all the time

The information in this section applies to all versions of Android.

If you send one mms message with 8sms but the recipient receives two instances of the same message, you may be experiencing this problem. This problem only occurs with mms. It does not occur with sms.

Usually it is caused by having 8sms AND another messaging app (maybe the stock messaging app that came with the phone, or something like Hangouts with sms/mms enabled) both running. It seems that when 8sms queues an mms message for sending, the other messaging app may notice that the message is in the queue and perform its own sending of the message. Hence, 8sms sends the message once, and the other messaging app also sends the message once.

The current solution for this is to freeze/disable/remove the other messaging app so only 8sms is performing mms functions.

If you are using an app (like Hangouts) which has sms/mms functionality, please disable sms/mms (ie. in Hangouts).

(If you are using Android Jelly Bean, this means you need to use 8sms in Stand-alone mode.)

(Receiving or sending) duplicate messages only sometimes

The information in this section applies to all versions of Android.

If this problem happens only sometimes, or only for some contacts, then it may be a network reception issue.

If network connectivity drops out after a message is sent but before it is acknowledged, then the message will be re-transmitted and the destination will get both messages.

This can happen if you or the other person is in an area of poor reception.

You might be in an area with very good network reception but the OTHER PERSON may in an area with poor network reception.
